Rooted in a rich tradition, Royal Salute’s deep connection to polo serves as the inspiration behind this exclusive collection of limited-edition whiskies. The 21 Year Old Rio de Janeiro Polo Edition, the seventh release in the series, embodies the vibrant essence of Rio de Janeiro, widely regarded as the heart of Brazilian polo. Here, among the prestigious Helvetia polo fields and the dynamic streets of Rio, the sport thrives with unparalleled passion—a fitting reflection of the blend of skill, honor, and elegance shared by both polo and Royal Salute’s exquisite whiskies.
Paying tribute to this iconic destination, Royal Salute’s Master Blender, Sandy Hyslop, has carefully crafted the bespoke 21 Year Old Blended Malt whisky. The whisky’s rich, fruity profile mirrors Rio’s dynamic culture. A key component of this exceptional blend comes from Braeval Distillery, where whiskies matured in first-fill casks provide fresh floral and grassy notes, reminiscent of Rio’s lush greenery. Combined with other malt whiskies aged in American Oak casks, which impart sweet, creamy flavors of vanilla and coconut, the resulting blend is beautifully smooth and balanced.
Hyslop commented on the release, saying: “The smooth, creamy sweetness of vanilla and coconut, alongside the fruity complexity of this whisky, mirrors the intricate dance of Bossa Nova music on a warm Brazilian evening. The inclusion of Braeval whisky matured in first-fill casks adds a new dimension to the blend, creating a layered and captivating experience that reflects the irresistible charm of Rio itself.”
Visually, the 21 Year Old Rio de Janeiro Polo Edition captures the vibrancy of Rio with its striking green flagon, inspired by the city’s lush landscapes, and elegant golden accents that nod to the iconic Brazilian flag. The whisky is beautifully encased in a presentation box that contrasts Rio’s urban cityscape with its breathtaking natural beauty.
